World Youth Day 2013
Rio de Janeiro

World Youth Day is an international gathering of Catholic young people (typically ages 16-30) from around the world held approximately every 2-3 years in varying host countries. It began with Pope St. John Paul II in 1984 as an outreach to the youth of the world and an invitation to an encounter with the Pope and other young people. The first World Youth Day was held in Rome, Italy in 1986.

The World Youth Day 2013 was held in Rio de Janeiro 23-28 July. Approximately two million young people joined Pope Francis for World Youth Day, for his only announced visit outside of Italy in 2013. The theme of World Youth Day is "Go and Make Disciples of All Nations!" (Matthew 28:19).

Two valuable lessons came out of World Youth Day 2013. The first is that the Holy Spirit is intent on igniting with joy and resilience the post conciliar Church of the twenty-first century. The second is that, in large part due to the catechetical influences of Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI, Pope Francis’s flock can better balance the joys of the Spirit with the Cross of Christ.

The stamp commemorating World Youth Day 2013 features the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer which stands on the peak of Corcovado Mountain overlooking the city. It is the largest Art Deco statue in the world and is composed on reinforced concrete and soapstone. Construction was completed in 1931. The €1,90 issue was printed in a sheet of ten stamps.
