Easter 2015
'Jesus Exits the Tomb'
Painting by Unknown Master

The 2015 Easter stamp is taken from the Unknown Master of the Crucifix of Trevi, located in the Pinacoteca (picture gallery) of the Vatican Museums. The stamp depicts the risen Christ, draped with a red cloak (symbolizing royalty), bearing a red standard (symbolizing victory), emerging from the tomb with sleeping guards lying on the ground around the tomb. The €0,80 value was issued in a mini sheet of four stamps with an enlarged figure of Jesus.

The Unknown Master of the Crucifix of Trevi created a Giotto-style crucifix for the Church of San Francesco in Trevi (Umbria) which is dated to the 14th century. The artwork for the Easter stamp is an undated separate painting.
