Father Lorenzo Milani
50th Anniversary of His Death

Lorenzo Milani (1923-1967), the son of non-believing upper-class parents, promoted education to poor and underserved students, especially in the remote village of Barbiana, Italy (Diocese of Florence). Milani was ordained a priest in 1947. His methods led to lay and clerical opposition because he challenged the class-based educational system of his day, and also because he included children of believers and non-believers in his schools. He was also a conscientious objector.

Milani died from leukemia in 1967, at age 44. Pope Francis visited Barbiana in 2017 and recognized Milani, stating, I would like us to remember him as a believer in love with the Church, even if wounded, and a passionate educator with a vision of schooling that I think responds to the needs of the hearts and intelligence of our young people.

The €0,95 stamp was designed by artist Antonella Napollione and is printed in sheets of ten. Included in the design of Milani, students, a church and mountains, is the inscription Sun una parete della nostra scuola abbiamo scritto grande, I Care (On the wall of our school we have written in large letters, I Care).
