Easter 2023 draws inspiration of the tenth anniversary of the election of Pope Francis and features a painting created for the occasion by Spanish artist Raúl Berzosa. The image develops the verse from the Gospel of Luke that reads: “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” (Lk 24:34). This year's €1,25 Easter Stamp image is the "Lord Appearing to Simon." The boat in the background of the scene recalls how the Lord transformed the apostle into a fisher of people. Christ points with his right hand to the keys in Simon’s hands as a reminder of the primacy of Peter ("the most prominent and influential member of the twelve during Jesus' ministry and in the early Church,") The left hand above a sheep reminds us that the Risen One, according to the Gospel of John, entrusted Peter with the mission of shepherding the sheep of his flock (Jn 21:17).
