Vatican Stamp Day at the Spellman Museum

Lou Giorgetti

Your Vatican Philatelic Society (VPS), in cooperation with the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History, is planning a Vatican Stamp Day at the Museum on Saturday, October 19, 2024. We won’t get into the specifics as to why this date is so far in the future but suffice it to say we hope this allows time for everyone to make plans to come to this special event.

The Spellman Museum is located on the campus of Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, just west of Boston. Founded in 1961 and opened in 1963, the Museum is one of two national philatelic museums in the United States. Founded under the auspices of Francis Cardinal Spellman, who served as the Archbishop of New York during the 1950’s and 1960’s, the Museum houses a vast collection of stamps, postal history items, reference books and other material associated with the study of philately. Cardinal Spellman was one of the great promoters of stamp collecting during his time, and was a member of VPS (member #1000). The Museum is a lasting testimony to his love of the hobby. Click on this link to view a brief introduction to the Museum.

The Spellman Museum has a large collection of philatelic material from the Roman/Papal States and Vatican City. We are hoping to put together a truly outstanding display of items from the Museum archives that are frankly not normally available to the general public for viewing. In addition, Cardinal Spellman had a rather large personal collection, and some of his personal material is displayed in the Museum Gallery. Many are unique and one-of-a-kind items that should not be missed.

Vatican Stamp Day will serve a few purposes. As part of the program for the day, we want to allow everyone time to visit the Museum, spend time in the Main Gallery, view the Vatican and Roman States materials that will be out for display, and attend a couple of presentations covering general Vatican City and Vatican philately topics. The event will also serve as a VPS Meet-Up where members will have an opportunity come together to meet and share experiences and interests. The VPS has not had a societal meeting in quite some time, and our hope is this early notice will allow time for members to make plans to attend and participate. As a note, one VPS member from Texas has already committed to attend. It is a great opportunity to plan a trip to the Boston area to enjoy the city and take in the fall foliage season, in addition to attending Vatican Stamp Day.

Working with the Museum, we also want to promote both the Museum and Vatican Philately to the general public. We are hoping to draw both non-collectors and stamp collectors at all levels to the event to learn about the beauty, history and enjoyment that can be gained by the collecting stamps of Vatican City.

So mark your calendars and make plans to head to Boston next October to attend what we hope will be a truly fun, educational and enlightening event: Vatican Stamp Day at the Spellman Museum.
