2014 Restoration Of St. Peter's Square

Marvin Lanahan

In 2012 the Vatican sold stamps to help pay for the restoration of the Bernini colonnade in St. Peter's Square. It the spring of 2014 we once again visited St. Peter's square and noticed the project being completed. Things were a good deal cleaner looking compared to earlier visits.

During our 2014 visit, work was still in
progress around the edges of the square.

Below is the stamp series sold to help pay the cost of the cleaning. It is composed of two €10 stamps affixed to a certificate, one stamp features Pope Benedicts XVI coat of arms and the other the seal of Pope Alexander VII, who entrusted the Baroque master Gain Lorenzo Bernini with the design of the colonnade in 1657. When the certificate was offered for sale by the UFN in 2012, it could be ordered customized with your name.
