Interesting 2012 Postmark

Marvin Lanahan

I recently purchased this cover on the internet from a dealer in Italy. The stamp is Scott #1477 from 2011, which celebrates Pope Benedict XVI's 60th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination and Installation as Pope in 2005. The postmark is 73mm long, the circle is 23mm in diameter, there are 7 wavy lines 43mm long, and there is 7mm between the circle and lines. Notice that there is no time with the March 5th, 2012 dateline. Many everyday Vatican postmarks include a timestamp. The 00120 is the Italian postal code for Vatican City. During my research, I learned that both Vatican City and San Marino use Italian postal codes. I'm not sure why red ink was used instead of the usual black ink found on most Vatican City postmarks.
