250th Anniversary of Birth Scott 1329 (2006) January 27 marks the birth date of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, one of the renowned classical composers of the 18th century. On June 22, 2006, Vatican City issued a mini-sheet containing six stamps to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Mozart’s birth. Born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, Mozart was the son of a classical violinist, Leopold. In addition to Wolfgang, the family had another gifted musician, Anna. Upon recognizing the talents of his children, the father stopping taking musical assignments and decided to concentrate on teaching his children the art of music. By age 4, Wolfgang was playing the violin and harpsichord, and by age 6 had begun to create his own musical compositions. During family travels across Europe, both Wolfgang and Anna began to perform in public and made contacts within the musical elite of the continent. As he matured, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart developed into one of the greatest musical composers of all time. The Vatican City stamp honoring Mozart features an etched portrait of the master. At the bottom of the stamp are musical notes from one of his compositions, Alleluia—Requiem Exsultate, Jubilate.
