![]() ![]() ![]() Postmark Type I-10(left), I-15 (center), I-21 (right) Pictured above are three different Vatican postmark types, all canceled on April 1st, 1933. Postmark I-10 has 8 lines with two corners in the upper and lower moons. The bottom and top of the postmark are separated by 6 pointed stars. Type I-15 has nothing in either the upper or lower moon and the postmark ring is separated by 6 pointed, flower-like stars. The type I-21 postmark has a 2 in the upper moon and has 8 pointed star separators. All three postmarks come from postcards which can be seen by visiting the VPS Cancellation Research Project webpage on the VPS website. What makes them unique is nothing more than they are all postmarked on the same date. There was nothing special occurring in the Vatican on this date. My research did find that on April 1st, 1933, the Vatican Post Office issued Ordinance XXXVIII announcing the first semi-postal stamps. This was a set of four stamps marking the 24th Holy Year. The first day of issuing these stamps would be two days later, April 3rd, 1933. No relationship to these postmarks, but an interesting one. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Semi-Postals - 24th Holy Year Scott B1-B4 (1933) On the world scene on April 1, 1933, the Nazis in Germany carried out the first nationwide, planned action against Jews: a boycott targeting Jewish businesses and professionals. Sad but true. It would be interesting to find other Vatican postmarks dated April 1, 1933. One can wonder how many postmark devices were in use on that particular day. Guess I'll just have to keep looking. |
