Piazza Farnese Postcard - 1930

Marvin Lanahan

The first designs of a palace for the Farnese Family were begun in 1517 in Rome Italy. The building was first designed by Antonio da Sangallo. The building expanded in size and conception when Alessandro Farnese became Pope Paul III in 1534. Later when Antonio da Sangallo died in 1547 and the project was turned over to Michelangelo. Other famous Italian architects have expanded the building. In 1936 the building was turned over to the French government (for 99 years) and has been the embassy of France ever since. The postcard above shows the building in 1933.

The postmark on this postcard is a bit smudgy but clearly shows a full circle. It does not seem to have been canceled at much of an angle. What is interesting is that the postmark does not seem to be any center lines in the postmark. Using computer software, the background was removed for the image. Still, there were no center lines to be found. Does anyone have a thought on this? Please use the VPS comment form to let us know.
