The second installment of stamps issued by Vatican City under the title “Restored Sistine Chapel: Masterpieces of the 15th Century” continued the depiction of the restoration of the Sistine Chapel that was undertaken over the final third of the twentieth century. This four-stamp set was released on February 15, 2001. As was seen with the first set of the series released in 2000, a common design was followed. The characteristic which differentiates the sets is the color of the left- and right-hand frames of the stamps. For 2001, the frames are red in color. The other interesting distinction is the fact that, in 2001, the stamps of Vatican City were denominated in both lira and euros as the city-state transitioned to the monetary unit of the European Union. The UFN release announcing the 2001 issue included the following: ”The story of the Old and New Testament continued to be told through the imagination and genius of some of the most famous artists of the Italian Renaissance that gave life to wonderful works of literature, religion and art and deeply influenced the history of mankind”.The four stamps for the year 2001 portray the following masterpieces: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() REFERENCES: |
