Prisoner of War Issues

Today's Page 2 link below connects the reader to another excerpt from the 1954 article by Vatican Philatelic Society president William Wonneberger, entitled "The Vatican's Postage Stamps".

As with yesterday's review, today's entry again reviews three stamp issues. These three-stamp sets were released to provide support to prisoners of war during World War II. The first issue was released in 1942, the second in 1944 and the third in 1945. Each set shares a similar design, with the main difference being the designation of the years 1942 (MCMXLII), 1943 (MCMXLIII) and 1944 (MCMXLIV) printed on the bottom of the stamp frames of each issue.

The article first appeared in the book Vatican, published by the National Philatelic Museum in conjunction with the Vatican Marian Year Philatelic Exhibition, held at the Museum in September, 1954. We hope you enjoy this serial review of the early stamps issued by Vatican City.
