He consigned the Papal Bull of Indiction, “Spes non confundit” (“Hope does not disappoint”) to the Archpriests of the Papal Basilicas and representatives of the world’s bishops during a ceremony at Saint Peter’s in the Vatican. The Bull announced some of the solemn events that will occur as part of the opening of the Jubilee Year. The Holy Door of St. Peter’s Basilica will be opened on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. The Holy Doors at the other Major Basilicas will be opened soon thereafter. On December 29, the Pope will open the Holy Door of the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the Cathedral of Rome. That same day, every Cathedral and co-Cathedral throughout the world will have Mass celebrated by the local Bishop to mark the opening of the Jubilee. On January 1, 2025, the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, Pope Francis will open the Holy Door for the Basilica of St Mary Major, to be followed on January 5, 2025, with the opening of the Holy Door for the Basilica of St. Paul’s Outside the Walls, coinciding with the Vigil of Epiphany. ![]() Holy Door at Saint Peter's Basilica Holy Year 2000 Scott 1136 One word from Pope Francis pervades the Bull: hope. Over the course of the Jubilee Year, Pope Francis called on Catholics to participate in events and pilgrimages during the Holy Year, and he writes: “In the course of the year…every effort should be made to enable the People of God to participate fully in its proclamation of hope in God’s grace and in the signs that attest to their efficacy.”The Jubilee Year will end for Churches around world on December 28, 2025, coinciding with the closing of the Holy Doors of St John Lateran, St Mary Major, and St Paul’s Outside the Walls. being closed on that same date. The Holy Year comes to its conclusion with the closing of the Holy Doors at Saint Peter’s Basilica on January 6, 2026. Pope Francis closes “Spes non confundit” by saying: ”Through our witness, may hope spread to all those who anxiously seek it. May the way we live our lives say to them in so many words: “Hope in the Lord! Hold firm, take heart and hope in the Lord!” (Ps 27:14).
