Bernini's Baldacchino
Before and During Current Restoration

On Thursday, January 11, 2024, the Vatican announced plans for a major restoration of the baldacchino over the main altar of Saint Peter’s Basilica. Work on the baldacchino, the largest bronze structure in the world, is being funded primarily by the Knights of Columbus. Work began back in February. The photo to the left above was taken back in 2021. The photos to the right and below were taken May 6, 2024, showing the baldacchino, which has been covered during the project. Anyone who has visited St. Peter's in Vatican City knows how huge everything appears: having Bernini's Baldacchino covered for restoration work gives the church a totally different look.
