![]() As summer approaches, October seems like it is still far out on the calendar. But Vatican Stamp Day at the Spellman Museum of Stamps and Postal History is fast approaching! Vatican Stamp Day will be held in the main gallery of the Museum on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from noon until 5 pm. The VPS Website Team, working with the executive director of the Museum, Brian Howard, is planning for an event that we hope will be fun and educational for stamp collectors and postal historians, as well as for non-collectors from the general public. We want to expose folks to the beauty and history of Vatican philately and fulfill the Museum's mission to reach out to the general public. The gallery will house a number of exhibits featuring a full range of topics related to the Vatican and the stamps and postal history of the Roman States and Vatican City. A slide show presentation is being planned to run during the event to review many aspects of Vatican philately as well. With the Vatican Stamp Day exhibition being held in the main gallery of the Museum, attendees will also be able to view a variety of exhibits covering the gamut of philately, include country-specific exhibits as well as topical exhibits prepared by the curators and staff of the Museum.
Francis Cardinal Spellman The Spellman Museum is located on the campus of Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, just west of Boston. Founded in 1961 and opened in 1963, the Museum is one of two national philatelic museums in the United States. Founded under the auspices of Francis Cardinal Spellman, who served as the Archbishop of New York from 1939 to 1967, the Museum houses a vast collection of stamps, postal history items, reference books and other material associated with the study of philately. Cardinal Spellman was one of the great promoters of stamp collecting during his time, as well as a member of VPS (member #1000). The Spellman Museum has a large collection of philatelic material from the Roman/Papal States and Vatican City which will serve as the source for what we hope will be a truly outstanding display of philatelic gems. We are fortunate to be able to display items from the Museum archives that are not normally available to the general public for viewing. In addition, Cardinal Spellman had a rather large personal collection, and some of his personal material is displayed in the Museum Gallery. Many are unique and one-of-a-kind items that should not be missed. If you are thinking about attending Vatican Stamp Day, you should make plans soon. Autumn in the Boston area is truly beautiful, and the event falls during the peak of foliage season, a time that draws many visitors to the region. So it would be best to start making plans and reservations at local hotels if you are going to attend this event. Since the Vatican Philatelic Society has not held a societal meeting in quite some time, this is a great opportunity to get together with fellow members and collectors. So mark your calendars and make plans to head to Boston in October to attend what we hope will be a truly fun, educational and enlightening event: Vatican Stamp Day at the Spellman Museum. |
