As we approach the start of the Holy Year (or Jubilee Year) of 2025, the members of the VPS Website Team have noted that Vatican City has not released a great number of stamps in preparation of the event. To date, there have been five souvenir sheets under the general heading “Pilgrimage Around the World on the Way to Jubilee 2025”, which ties to the theme of the Holy Year, which is “Pilgrims of Hope”. This lack of stamps for the Holy Year is in stark contrast to the last regular Holy Year, held 25 years ago in the year 2000, when there were many stamps tied to the Jubilee Year. Perhaps it is a reflection of the times, or perhaps having the Holy Year coincide with the turn of the millennium, that brought increased attention on the Jubilee in 2000. By clicking on the Page 2 tab below, the reader is brought to a review of one of the stamp releases for the Holy Year of 2000: the stamps and mini-sheet showing the Holy Door at Saint Peter’s Basilica. One of the eight stamps on the sheet is seen in today’s Daily Email, showing the panel depicting Thomas the Apostle examining the wounds of the risen Jesus Christ. The review on Page 2 is based on a review written by James Hamilton for Vatican Notes in 2020. It serves as a good look back to 2000 as we also look forward to 2025. |
