Today's excerpt from our series "Popes on the Stamps of Vatican City" reviews the four popes from the mid-20th century, covering the years 1939 to 1978. The stamps shown for each pope (with the exception of Pope John Paul I) represent a small sampling of the stamps issued picturing each of them. With the development of the Vatican Post Office and the need for definitive, airmail and commemorative stamps, and the need to address changes in postal rates following World War II, a great number of stamps were issued that portrayed the reigning pope. Our review is meant to provide a representative sampling of these stamps.
