Magnifica Humanitas: The First Encyclical of Pope Leo XIV
Vatican City, Released September 24, 2026

Pope Leo Recovers from Surgery

As has been widely reported, Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital last week for the removal of a nodule on his right lung. The surgical team would remove the lower lobe of the lung as the growth was determined to be cancerous. According to press releases, the surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes and was "successful", with no complications, according to his doctors.

Following surgery, Pope Leo's recovery proceeded normally. He concelebrated Mass on the day after the surgery and resumed some of his normal activities within the first couple of days. One Saturday, he left the hospital and returned to the Vatican following his 5-day hospitalization. And, on Sunday, he presented his weekly Angelus devotion in Saint Peter's Square, exactly one week after he announced his impending surgery.

As of this writing, he was due to be return to his normal schedule of activities this week. And, according to the Vatican Press Office, no changes have been made to his upcoming travel schedule, which has him heading to South America starting on November 6 for a rigorous 11-day apostolic voyage. His surgeon stated that "there are no clinical reasons why it should not take place."

The Vatican Philatelic Society passes along its best wishes and prayers to Pope Leo for his speedy and complete recovery.
